FIGURES AND FACTS 2010
03-04-05.12.2010, Ghent (B)
The premise of “Figures And Facts 2010” was quite simple: to organise an event that would focus on the broad field of contemporary visual arts in Ghent. The initiative was taken by the city of Ghent, the art academy K.A.S.K., the university of Ghent and the art fair Lineart. It involved art galleries, museums, independent art institutes, art schools and organisations.
It was one of the most difficult commissions I ever took on, because they asked me rather late so there wasn’t much time to do a proper marketing campaign and so on. Moreover, the commissioning partners didn’t always agree on how the whole event had to be conceived and apparently they had different interests as well. Still, I managed to pull it off more or less like I had it in mind though the attendence figures could have been better. All in all when all was done I had mixed feelings about the result but I certainly learned a lot.
We had a central meeting point in a modernist university building where artist Pieterjan Ginckels installed the first version of his work “S.P.A.M. Office”. It functioned as a sculpture/ installation, as a site for a three-day long performance and as an information centre. Busses drove around town to bring visitors to the various venues and people could rent bikes. Several participating organisations or institutions put up special events on the occasion – for instance SECONDroom organised an art party, Tatjana Pieters Gallery held an artists’ talk and you could even eat delicious pan cakes at Fortlaan Gallery on Sunday.
I am enormously grateful to a lot of people who put great effort in this project. The list would be too extensive but they certainly know who they are!
