While preparations for Tinka Pittoors’ solo outdoor exhibition at Leuven’s Botanical Garden were on its way in 2012, discussions had started about a first monograph of the artist. I was appointed as editor and eventually wrote the main text. Other, very insightful contributions came from art critics Dominique Legrand, Christine Vuegen, Jan van Woensel and Ruth Loos. The design was in the hands of Kim Beirnaert and Pierre Stubbe, who already had plenty of experience with art books, and it shows – the publication has a stunning look. To retain as much control over the project as possible, Tinka Pittoors chose to self-publish the book, entitled Tinka Pittoors – Symbolic Violence”.

In February 2012, right after its publication, we organised a book launch at Leuven’s Museum M, at which I had a conversation with the artist and her video ‘Urbicide – Plastic Territory’ (2010) was shown.

Invitation text:

The work of Tinka Pittoors (born Brasschaat, B., 1977) discloses a fascination for the friction points between dichotomies such as nature versus culture, artificial versus natural, structure versus chaos and so on. Mostly her sculptures and installation are colourful assemblages of found objects and self-assembled components. Her drawings and paintings lay bare a similar attitude towards form and content. After a remarkable series of shows and commissions as well as in Belgium as abroad, including last year’s open-air exhibition in the Botanical Garden of Leuven, the artist now presents her first monograph at Museum M in Leuven.
